JUNEAU - In celebration of April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Aiding Women in Abuse and Rape Emergencies will host its second annual Waterfront AWAREness Race at 10 a.m. Saturday beginning and ending at the Juneau Arts & Culture Center, old armory by Centennial Hall.
The 5K run along the downtown waterfront will honor survivors of child abuse and sexual assault. Following the race, there will be a speakout for sexual assault victims or survivors.
"The speakout gives victims and survivors an opportunity to just talk about how sexual assault has affected their life, what changes they've made, maybe what influence they've had in the legal system," said Ellen Andrews, AWARE program manager. "It's just a great opportunity for people to talk."
Adults cost $15 to pre-register and $20 on the day of the race. Scholarships are available. Pre-register at Nugget Alaskan Outfitters, Foggy Mountain Shop, JRC The Alaska Club, Pavitt's Health and Fitness or Fitness Essentials.
