FAIRBANKS - An airman from Eielson Air Force Base has entered a plea agreement with prosecutors just as testimony was to begin in a second trial accusing him of trying to kill his wife.
Joseph Basom was originally charged with attempted murder and other counts.
The 32-year-old man pleaded guilty Wednesday to lesser charges including assault.
Basom has been in custody since his arrest in August. He was sentenced to a little more than a year in prison and, with good behavior, will be released in about two weeks.
Authorities say Basom was upset about his failing marriage when he choked his wife, Kelsi, and threatened her with a knife in their North Pole home last August.
His first trial ended in a mistrial in February.
