I don't know how many of you have been to the top of Mount Juneau recently, but if you get a chance to hike up there you won't believe your eyes. The place looks like an abandoned construction site, (which is exactly what it is) and it is very ugly. There are a couple of huge metal containers that were evidently helicoptered in; as well as a backhoe that is rusting away. A lot of dirt work has also been done and a cheap wooden building has been thrown in for good measure. There is also a large amount of garbage strewn about; needless to say, the place is in dire need of being cleaned up.
As I understand it, the top of the mountain is privately owned and was part of the late Chuck Keen's dream. Either way, after hiking up the beautiful trail, it is like walking into some twisted nightmare. It is definitely not a place you would want unsuspecting tourists to venture to; as it tarnishes the tranquil beauty of the mountain. It's like the "oil pond" above Taku Smokeries and directly below the AJ mine; not something you would really want anyone to know about.
Whether or not it is the city's job to do it, something needs to be done about it. There are many things in this town that are out-of-sight-out-of-mind, and this attitude needs to change. Instead of superficially cleaning up Juneau for the tourists, why don't we clean it up for ourselves?
