JRC/The Alaska Club racquetball - After Tax Racquet Attack Party/Tourney: The entry deadline for this event is Wednesday, April 14, and the tournament takes place starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 17. All players are guaranteed at least two matches in each division and they may play in a maximum of two events. Entry fee is $10 plus tax per event. All players must wear protective eyewear. 20th annual Julie Hughes Triathlon entries - Participants must register from 5-7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 7, for this Sitka event that takes place starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 8. Adult athletes will complete a course with a 5-mile run, a 12-mile bike and a 1,000-meter swim. A short course of 2-mile run, 4-mile bike and 500-meter swim is available for athletes age 12-younger, and all bikers age 9-younger must be accompanied by an adult during their event. Several individual and team race categories are available, including family and corporate teams. The entry fee is $20 and it includes a t-shirt. All bikes must pass a safety inspection before the race, which is done by Yellow Jersey Bike Shop free of charge. Volunteers are needed. Eaglecrest Ski Area - Final weekend of the season events: The final public race of the season is the Grand Spring Dual Slalom Championship held at 11 a.m. Saturday on Ego for all skiers and snowboarders; the Easter Bunny visits on Saturday with events starting at 12:30 p.m.; there is an Easter breakfast special at time TBA on Sunday; an Easter bonnet contest at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the day lodge; and the Slush Cup at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the end of Lower Hilary's, with judging for style, costumes, speed and amplitude. Gastineau Channel Little League umpire training - Adult umpires are needed for the upcoming baseball and softball seasons. Umpires will officiate at various age levels, both behind the plate and on the bases. Flexible schedules exist with night and weekend games. The league season opens on Saturday, April 24. Training clinics take place from 6-9 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, April 14 and 15, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 17, at the Mendenhall River Community School. Juneau Parks and Recreation sports field reservations - Juneau Parks and Rec began accepting summer sports field reservations for Dimond and Savikko Parks on Monday, April 5. Fields are available for use starting Friday, April 9, and continuing through the summer. Cost is $16 per hour plus tax, and goes down as hours of use increase. Reservations must be made in person at the Parks and Rec office at City Hall between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Info: Juneau Parks and Recreation, 586-5226.
Juneau Disc Golf Association registration - The Juneau Disc Golf Association's season will be starting soon. The first of four monthly tournaments is scheduled for May 1-2 on the new course at Aant'iyeik Park, located above Glacier Highway between the Auke Rec turnoff and Lena Loop Road. Mount Jumbo Gym preschool open gym - This Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation program is open from 10:30 a.m. to noon every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 909 Fourth Street in Douglas for children ages 1-6 and their parents or caregivers. A ratio of four children to one adult must be met. Balls, mats, trikes, scooters, large building blocks, parachutes and a Little Tykes climber system will be available for use. Juneau 4-H Spring Running Club - This program is for runners in grades 1-5, with a separate club for runners in grades 6-8. The club meets at 5:30 p.m. every Thursday at various locations around town through the spring and summer, at least through the Douglas Two-Mile run on July 4. Bring a water bottle and be dressed to run. If you did not attend the first meeting on April 8, please contact the University of Alaska Extension Office to register. Upcoming meeting places are Sandy Beach (Douglas) on April 15, Rotary Park on April 22, Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park track on April 29, the Auke Rec large shelter on May 6, Cope Park on May 13, the Riverbend Community School covered play area on May 20 and the Wetlands Trail on May 27. Local runners John and Jamie Bursell lead the group for grades 1-5, while Craig Farrington leads the middle school group. Parents are encouraged to run with their kids. Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - Climbing wall hours are 3-7 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and 3-9 p.m. on Fridays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. Treadwell Arena programs - The ice arena is open seven days a week with a variety of public open skates, youth open skates, pond hockey and rental times available through Sunday, April 25 (see Treadwell Arena Web site for details). The rink is closed for ice maintenance from 7:45-10:45 a.m. on Mondays and from 7:45 a.m. to noon on Fridays. Fees for open skates are $4 adults, $3 youths (age 17-younger) and $2 seniors (age 65-older). Fees for pond hockey are $5 adults, $4 youths and $3 seniors. Skate rental is $2 for adults and youths, and $1.90 for seniors. Passes are available for open skates, pond hockey and skate rental. Facility rental is $150 an hour. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
