Juneau-Douglas High School Dance Team community show - The JDHS Dance Team will host its annual community show on two nights this year - Thursday, April 14, and Friday, April 15 - from 7-9:15 p.m. in the JDHS main gym. Doors open at 6 p.m.; arrive early for the best seating. Tickets are $10 in advance from Hearthside Books, at the JDHS Activities Office or from Dance Team members. If available, tickets will be sold at the door for $12. The show will feature this season's dance routines, and guest performances by the Dads' Drill Team, the Janice Holst Dancers and other groups. Juneau Freewheelers Outer Point Time Trial bike race - This 10-mile time trial will start at 6:30 p.m. at the False Outer Point parking lot on North Douglas Highway. Registration begins at 5:45 p.m. Riders will start one at a time in a race against the clock; all ability levels are welcome. Spring MS Walk/Run - This 3-mile walk/5-kilometer run will start at 10 a.m. at the Brotherhood Bridge parking lot; race-day registration begins at 9 a.m. Registration forms are also available at Foggy Mountain Shop and both locations of JRC/The Alaska Club. The event races money to help find a cure for multiple sclerosis. The minimum registration donation is $15; individuals or teams are encouraged to collect additional pledges, with a variety of prizes available depending on money raised. Juneau Soccer Club competitive team tryouts - The Juneau Soccer Club has scheduled competitive team tryouts to be held at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park. The schedule is: Saturday, April 16: 4:30-6 p.m. - U12 girls, U13 girls; 6-7:30 p.m. - U14 girls; 7:30-9 p.m. - U12 boys, U14 boys. Sunday, April 17: 9:30-11 a.m. - U15 girls; 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. - U15 boys; 12:30-2 p.m. - U13 boys. Tryouts for U16 teams are TBA. For U16 girls info, contact Tom Rutecki at 780-6176. Evening Masters Swimming program - The Augustus Brown pool hosts a twice-weekly Evening Masters Swimming program. The program will meet from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and is designed to promote and improve the physical and mental well-being of adults age 19-older. Yukon River Quest 2005 registration - The longest annual canoe and kayak race in the world is accepting applications for its 2005 race. The race takes place June 29 through July 3, and the 460-mile (740-kilometer) course follows the Yukon River from Whitehorse to Dawson City, Yukon Territory. The deadline for entries is May 26, 2005, and more information is available on the event's Web site at http://www.yukonriverquest.com. Last year 51 teams from around the world, including racers from Southeast Alaska, started the race and 35 teams finished. A limit of 70 teams has been set for 2005 and the race is open to tandem and solo kayaks and recreational tandem canoes and voyageur canoes (that seat 6-14 paddlers). Entry fees are $600 (Canadian) for tandem canoes and kayaks, $300 for solo kayaks and $200 per person for voyageur canoes. The total purse for the race is $15,500 (Canadian), which is distributed among the top 10 teams overall and to category winners. The first-place team receives $3,000 and an entry into the 2006 race. Mount Jumbo preschool open gym - Preschool open gyms for children ages 1-6 and an adult parent or caregiver take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays through April. There must be at least one adult present for every four kids. There is a $1 per child fee, or punchcards for $10 and $50 can be bought at the gym, which is located at 909 4th Street in Douglas. Tricycles, mats, balls, a Little Tykes climber, building blocks and a kid-sized basketball hoop are available. Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - Climbing wall hours are 5-7 p.m. on Mondays, and 3:30-7 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. Juneau Archery Club youth shooting - Archery shooting is held on Friday nights, with sessions at 6 p.m., 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Space is limited and is available on a first-come, first-served basis. ADF&G Indoor Shooting Range closure - Due to a turnover of staff at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game's indoor shooting range, the range has suspended normal public shooting hours. The department's Division of Wildlife Conservation is working to fill staff vacancies and hopes to reopen the range to public shooting in a few weeks. Juneau Community Schools open gyms - Basketball, volleyball and soccer open gyms for adults are available several times a week. Basketball and volleyball open gyms are held Fridays and Sundays from 7-9 p.m. at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. Soccer open gyms are held Sundays from 6:45-8:45 p.m. at Floyd Dryden Middle School. Basketball/volleyball court rentals available - The Juneau Community Schools program has basketball/volleyball court rental times available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
