Giving props to pops for rescue work

I'd like to take this opportunity to applaud my heroic father, Pat Vallejo, who was not individually recognized for risking his life to help the residents of the apartment that was destroyed by fire on April 4.

Sound off on the important issues at

Even before the fire department arrived, my dad was there on the scene with other citizens, helping people get out. A beautiful malamute that was thrown out a top-floor window was caught in my father's arms, and before he was stopped, he was about to run into the building, which was engulfed by flames, to help our neighbors.

I am very proud of my dad. He is my hero.

I urge the people of Juneau, especially those who live downtown, to make sure their smoke detectors are working properly; the buildings downtown are very old and are more susceptible to catching fire very quickly.
