Alaska Airlines cancels more MD-80 flights for FAA inspections

Posted: Friday, April 11, 2008

SEATTLE - Alaska Airlines canceled 11 more flights Thursday for federally mandated wiring inspections on MD-80 passenger jets, bringing the total to 42 cancellations in three days.

The airline was working to arrange other flights for about 1,000 passengers who were affected by the latest cancellations, which included two flights each from Seattle, Anchorage and Oakland, Calif., spokeswoman Caroline Boren said.

Alaska canceled 28 flights affecting 2,600 passengers Wednesday and three flights Tuesday.

Stranded and rerouted passengers had lots of company.

American Airlines canceled more than 900 flights Thursday, the third day of mass groundings by the nation's largest airline, and Midwest Airlines canceled at least 10 flights, all to conduct inspections of wiring harnesses ordered by the FAA and to make any needed repairs.

The Alaska cancellations have had less overall effect because they have been less concentrated and involve nine planes, less than 10 percent of the carrier's fleet of 115 aircraft.
