Word of Mouth gives readers a forum to express opinions on a variety of issues by telephone. Calls must be limited to one minute. We reserve the right to edit calls for clarity, length and libel. Callers must leave their name and a number at which they can be contacted (usually between 8 a.m. and noon). Only comments accompanied by a name will be published and only after the caller's identity is verified. Callers' names will appear in print. Call 586-4636 and press 8255 to leave a message.

We are wondering just exactly how tall that Chinese soldier is on Wednesday's front page and we're debating over it. So if anyone knows the real height of the Chinese soldier in Wednesday's paper please let us know.

There goes your wonderful or is it "wonder when" ferry system. If you made summer plans around the ferry system in order to get out of Juneau or to come back you better see the latest revisions. The road sounds better.

While I enjoy the content of the your newspaper, I wonder sometimes about your editorial practices. The column by Robert Loescher was way over the limit, by people who can count, and yet other people I know who have submitted such columns have been held hard and fast to the 700-word stopping point. If you are going to arbitrarily change rules on people at least specify who gets to write how much.

The decision to run Mr. Loescher's My Turn at a length that exceeded the published word limit was made in consideration of the news value and community interest in his comments. I should have published an editor's note to that effect yesterday. Exceptions to the word limit are considered on a case-by-case basis. - Steve Reed, Managing Editor
