Why not move the Juneau airport?

Posted: Wednesday, April 12, 2006

The March 30 edition of the Empire said the Juneau Airport Board has proposed spending $76 million on renovation and expansion of our airport. I wonder if spending money to renovate and expand the existing airport is the best choice for the long-term needs of Juneau. According to the article, the present airport began operation in 1948 - 58 years ago. Juneau and the aircraft that use the airport have changed a lot over the past 58 years. It does not seem unreasonable to expect that the town of Juneau, and the aircraft that use the airport, will continue to change over the next 58 years.

Sound off on the important issues at

Many pilots note that the Juneau airport is not the easiest one they've ever used. Besides the geographic approach and take-off obstacles, there are usually an abundance of birds in the vicinity. In addition, the town has grown up around the airport, so many people are bothered by airplane engine noise.

Maybe now would be a good time to have the experts look around the area to see if there might be a better place to relocate the airport. No matter where an airport is located, the immediate area will be impacted by its presence, however, maybe there is some location that would be safer and cause less annoyance to the public.
