As we think about affordable housing here in Juneau, let's take a good look at our harbors, which are already a real and viable affordable housing option for many of us.

Sound off on the important issues at

Contrary to what many believe, most notably those of the Docks and Harbors Board, the liveaboard community attracts folks of all means and lifestyles, with boats and barges of all shapes and sizes. This is not just because it's some of the most affordable housing in town; we also enjoy the colorful camaraderie of the harbors, which offer some of the best views around.

I encourage the Housing Task Force and the Planning Commission to walk the docks, talk with harbor liveaboards and get to know us. It needs to be recognized, that a well-managed, well-maintained harbor community is a viable affordable housing option. It is already up and running, yet it's still consistently overlooked and, more sadly, often maligned.
