The citizens' cruise ship initiative should be sacred and followed to the letter of the initiative. We have a problem in Juneau with some legislators - House Speaker John Harris, R-Valdez; Rep. Mike Kelly, R-Fairbanks; Rep. John Coghill, R-North Pole; and other Republicans - who want to change the initiative in favor of the cruise industry.

The only solution to this problem is to move the legislative session out of Juneau, so legislators will be accountable to the general public. As it stands now, their only real contacts are other politicians and lobbyists. If they were in the light of day, they would no longer be petty dictators.
Without the initiative process, we the citizens will have no alternative when we find our legislators are out of control. The initiative must be retained in the spirit it was written, or it is meaningless and we have no control over our elected body. The people who want to change the initiative should not be returned to elected office, but replaced with honest people who have the citizens of Alaska at heart, instead of personal agendas.
