Nevada man delivers Hindu invocation to lawmakers

Posted: Monday, April 12, 2010

JUNEAU - A Nevada man has delivered Hindu invocations - possibly a first - in the Alaska House and Senate.

The clerk's offices report Friday's prayer readings from the Rigveda, a Hindu sacred text, as a possible first based on institutional knowledge going back 15 years in the Senate and 25 years in the House.

Rajan Zed, originally from India, read the prayers in Sanskrit and English.

Zed says he spends time traveling and meeting government officials to promote interfaith dialogue. He's done similar prayers in Congress and several state capitols.
