Juneau and Anchorage student symphonies to play Saturday

JUNEAU - The Juneau Student Symphonies and the Anchorage Youth Symphony will perform a joint Spring Symphonic Celebration at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 15, at the Floyd Dryden Middle School gymnasium.

The Student Symphony, the Student Sinfonietta and the Anchorage symphony will play works by Rimsky-Korsakov, Brahms, Borodin, von Weber, Copland, and Bernstein, culminating with a grand finale of Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition."

Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.

The Anchorage Youth Symphony is visiting Juneau as part of their Southeast Alaska tour, which includes a concert in Sitka. Besides its three-concert season in Anchorage, the symphony has also played children's concerts, toured to Fairbanks and performed twice with the Anchorage Symphony.

This is the Juneau Student Symphonies' final concert of a season that has included a pops concert, three regular season concerts and the honor of being the orchestra for Perseverance Theatre's holiday production of King Island Christmas.

Eaglecrest to celebrate Easter with Purple Easter Bunny

JUNEAU - Eaglecrest Ski Area will celebrate Easter Sunday with an appearance by the Purple Easter Bunny in the Day Lodge at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 16.

The festivities begin at 1 with an Easter bonnet contest for all ages at the front of the Day Lodge. At 1:30, a Bunny Chase for kids 6 and under begins at the top of the Hooter Lift. At 2, the Bunny Chase for kids 7 and over starts at the top of the Hooter.

The all-ages Easter Egg Hunt starts at 2:30 at the base of the Platter slope. There's an all-ages egg toss at the bottom of platter at 3.

Family Grind, Bump-n-Grind set for Friday at VFW

JUNEAU - The all-ages Family Grind and 21-and-over Bump-n-Grind, Juneau's egalitarian open-mike variety shows, will be held this Friday, April 14, at the VFW Hall, First and Gold streets.

The Family Grind starts at 7 p.m. Admission is $5, or free if you bring a dessert to share or are less than 3 years old. The Bump-n-Grind begins at 10 p.m. Admission is also $5.

New children's art studio to host open house

JUNEAU - The Creating Place, a new children's art studio in downtown Juneau, will be holding an open house from 12:30-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, April 24-28, at 226 Seward St.

Snacks will be served, and arts and crafts activities will be available for children.
