Moderate quake hits northwest Alaska

ANCHORAGE - A moderate earthquake struck the Bering Strait region at 5:41 a.m. Sunday. It had a preliminary magnitude of 5.0, according to the Alaska Earthquake Information Center.

The quake was centered 34 miles southwest of Point Hope.

Point Hope resident Dorcus Rock was making coffee when she felt the quake, which she initially thought was a tractor trailer passing by, she told the Alaska Public Radio Network.

There were no immediate reports of damage.
