Posted: Wednesday, April 14, 2010

HAINES - Alaska state troopers say a 14-year-old boy that killed a moose in Haines shot illegally. He was sentenced Monday to 30 hours of community service.

The Anchorage Daily News reports the boy shot the cow moose in February after it charged the family dog.

Investigators determined the moose had stopped - was not being aggressive - and that the shooting was not a legitimate defense of life or property.

The boy was cited for taking a cow moose during a closed season. In addition to community service he's required to complete a hunter education course before he can get a hunting license.
