The Juneau Chamber of Commerce is undergoing a change in leadership, but not direction.
Jamie Parsons starts Monday as the new chamber executive director and Roy Kyle is becoming president of the chamber board of directors.
Both men said they want to continue projects started under the leadership of ex-chamber executive director George Davidson and retiring chamber president Jim Weber.
When Davidson came out of retirement a year and a half ago to lead the chamber, he warned it would only be temporary. Davidson set up committees to focus on transportation, tourism and the University of Alaska Southeast.
"The work that George Davidson has done is great," Parsons said. "To keep the momentum going would be my goal and get more people involved and have a little bit greater visibility in the community."
Parsons is a co-owner of Juneau Racquet Club. He served 11 years on the Juneau Assembly, including three as mayor. He has also been president of the state Chamber of Commerce and served a year and a half as state director of business development.
He sees the mission of the Chamber of Commerce to build business by enhancing the quality of life in Juneau.
"What's good for Juneau is good for business," Parsons said. "A healthy community overall means a healthy economy and healthy business."
Kyle supported Parsons becoming executive director. Kyle is manager of National Bank of Alaska's downtown branch. He's served on the chamber board for three years and was president elect. Weber's announcement two weeks ago that he was selling his house, retiring from GCI and moving to Montana just came sooner than Kyle expected.
"You don't show up for the chamber meeting and look what happens," Kyle said.
Kyle also wants the chamber to become more active and build membership.
"We need to get more involved in the community and bring in more diverse groups," Kyle said, "so it's more representative of the entire community, not just one sector of the business community."
