Photos: Skim boarding at Sandy Beach

Posted: Tuesday, April 15, 2003

Kevin Almlie, top, skim boards along the waterline Monday afternoon at Sandy Beach. Almlie and his sister, Traci, discovered skim boarding on a trip to Mexico and are now making boards for their friends to enjoy the sport. The boards are oval-shaped plywood about 112 feet wide by 3 feet long. The University of Alaska Southeast students run, throw the board along the waterline, jump on and hydroplane as far as the board takes them.

Chris Kruzick, below, emerges from cold water after falling in while skim boarding with friends.
