The Ice Pirates capped a remarkable turnaround by capturing the Juneau Adult Hockey Association Tier A championship Sunday with a 5-3 win over the Kensington Goldminers at Treadwell Arena.
The Ice Pirates, who were in last place prior to the post-season tournament, received two goals and two assists from Brian Drew in the win.
Mike Bovitz had two goals, Greg Smith added a goal and an assist while Aaron Jacobs contributed two assists for the Ice Pirates. Lorne Wilson also had an assist while Ben White made 31 saves in the win.
The Ice Pirates scored three third-period goals to claim the championship.
The Goldminers' Dave Kovach scored a hat trick in defeat while James Feldman and Flip Pryor had assists.
Kensington goaltender Jerry Nankervis stopped 12 shots in the loss.
WOMEN'S B
Alaskan Dames 4, Les Schwab 0
Karn Hickok scored a hat trick Sunday as Alaskan Dames won the Women's B title over Les Schwab.
Kristen Bartlett scored while Lauree DiCarlo and Lisa Ibias had assists. Alaskan Dames goaltender Val Martinez made 16 saves to preserve the shutout.
For Les Schwab, goaltender Dawn Voss blocked 15 shots.
TIER B
Maroon 3, Fighting Sloths 2, OT
Dave Haas scored with 1:33 left in overtime to give the Maroon a playoff win over the Fighting Sloths.
Bobby Jones and Brian Van Kirk picked up the assists on Haas' goal.
Maroon goaltender Jodie Pessolano made 26 saves in the win.
For the Fighting Sloths, Thomas McKenzie and Micah Sommers scored goals while Jason McAdoo had an assist.
TIER C
Capital City Fire and Rescue 4,Air Excursions 1
Gary Rennie posted a hat trick as Capital City Fire and Rescue beat Air Excursions in the Tier C tournament.
Michael Wright also scored for CCFR while John Adams, Bill Hill and Brent Clancy posted assists. CCFR goaltender Jason McAdoo stopped 12 of 13 shots to preserve the win.
Alpheus Bullard scored Air Excursions' lone goal off an assist by Zach Jones. Pete Sommers turned back 25 shots in the loss.
WOMEN'S A
Subway 2, Blue 1
Subway slipped past the Blue team in the Women's A tournament.
Jana Linfield and Mary Ellen Arvold scored in the win while Stacy McKeown had an assist. Goaltender Scott Sell stopped 28 shots in the win.
For the Blue team, Cathy Tide scored off assists by Carrie Bohan and Christy Baseden. Jodie Pessolano turned back 18 of 20 shots in defeat.
