Repurposed bag workshop held Sunday

Posted: Thursday, April 15, 2010

In honor of Earth Day, and inspired by Turning the Tides, the Canvas Community Art Studio & Gallery is offering a free family bag-making workshop this weekend. Turn your favorite old t-shirt into a bag you won't forget to take to the market, and reduce local use of plastic shopping bags.

In addition to t-shirt bags, the Canvas will offer inspiration on hand for other creative bag making innovations. Bring cool ideas, supplies, t-shirts and stop by the Seward Street facility anytime between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. this Sunday.

According to 2008 figures released by the Piedmont Environmental Alliance, plastic shopping bags are typically used less than 30 minutes and only 1 percent are recycled. The average American adult uses approximately 288 bags a year, or 22,000* in an average lifetime.
