Florence Marjorie Bennett

Hoonah and former Juneau resident Florence Marjorie Bennett died peacefully on April 9, 2010, after a brief illness in Juneau. She was 89.

Born July 8, 1920, to Charles and Elsie Bobb in Juneau, she lived her entire life in various communities in Alaska, before returning to her hometown of Hoonah.

She enjoyed an active life. She loved her family's company camping and traveling up and down the Alaska Highway visiting old, as well as making new friends through out her lifetime. She was at her very best surrounded by her large family. Regaling them with her clever and quick wit. Florence was an exceptional story teller. She also happy to share from her life experiences, tales to encourage and uplift her friends and family. She was remembered by her family for her love of dancing, both traditional Tlingit dancing, family also notes her for love of dancing the jitterbug.

She was proud of her Alaska Native heritage and her grandparents, Frank and Sally Mercer, both of whom were instrumental in the formation of the Alaska Native Brotherhood and Sisterhood.

She was preceded by her parents, Charles and Elsie; brother, Frank Phillip Mercer; sisters, Esther Bobb, Irene Culver and Frances Marvin; step-father, Jimmy Jack; uncles, Edwin Mercer Sr., Herbert Mercer, Charles Jack Sr., Amos Wallace and Lincoln Wallace; niece, Charlotte (Marvin) Duncan; grandson, Leon Charles Nelson; great-grandson, Lee Charles; and cousins, Dora Williams, Rachel Madden and Sarah Jewel.

She is survived by her children, daughter, Beverly Duguqua; sons, Charles (Marilyn), George (Mary) and Fredrick (Nora); 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren; as well as various family members in Alaska and also through out the Lower 48.

Services are scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, April 15, at the Alaska Native Brotherhood Hall in Juneau. Officiating will be Pastor Jerry Bennett of the Church of God.

Pallbarers will be Andy Gamble, James O.L. Bennett, Carl Marvin III, Benjamin L. Marvin, James Jack Sr., Leroy Williams and Harvey Lindoff. She will be taken to Hoonah for burial. Arrangements pending.
