Anchorage police kill armed man in standoff

ANCHORAGE - Police shot and killed an armed man during an hour-long standoff Wednesday at an Anchorage apartment.

Lt. Dave Parker said officers felt threatened by Joseph Gannon, 48, who refused to let in authorities responding to a call that a woman in the apartment was not breathing. Parker declined to say how many officers fired on Gannon, but dozens of officers had surrounded the apartment at the time.

No officers were injured, and Gannon's mother, who was in the apartment, also was not hurt.

Parker said police negotiated by phone, and a SWAT team was arriving at the scene when the man came out with a handgun and confronted officers.

Parker said the motive behind the standoff was unclear.

As part of department policy, the names of the law enforcement involved in the shooting will not be released for three days.
