Cheaper by the sea

One of the arguments frequently used for building a road to Juneau is that it will be so much cheaper to ship in goods. Let me tell you my experience.

I just got a quote from Alaska Marine Lines to ship a 45-pound package from Juneau to Mechanicsville, Md. It would cost $34.65 to ship from Juneau to Seattle (presumably NOT by road) and $294.71 from Seattle to Mechanicsville. That's 4 cents/mile from Juneau to Seattle and 11 cents/mile from Seattle to Maryland.

Several years ago we bought a dining room table in San Francisco. It cost us $100 to ship the table from San Francisco to Seattle (13 cents/mile) and $40 to ship from Seattle to Juneau (4 cents/mile).

Frankly, I can't afford the increased costs that would result from building a road into Juneau.
