Coast Guard to offer free boat safety checks

JUNEAU - The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary District 17 will offer free boat safety checks with a drive-through from 8:30 a.m.

to 3 p.m. Saturday at Western Auto Marine.

Checks are meant for those who operate a small boat, personal watercraft or platform boat for hunting and fishing.

During the safety check, volunteer examiners and boat owners will go over the boat and its equipment. Examiners will check for navigation lights, personal flotation devices (life jackets and throwable cushions), sound producing devices, visual distress signals, fire extinguishers, flame arrestor and ventilation for inboard engines and other enclosed compartments, permanent fuel tanks and boat registration.
