KODIAK - Kodiak students might benefit in the future from an underused laboratory at the Fisheries Technology Research Center.
Switgard Duesterloh, a former state fisheries scientist, wants to see an ocean sciences lab set up in a large storage space at the research center.
Robert Foy, the center's director, also supports the idea.
Duesterloh told the Kodiak Island Borough School District board this week that she believes a lab would help fill a need for better ocean science education in Kodiak. She said scientists are willing to work with students and such a lab would provide a means to that end.
Schools superintendent Stewart McDonald said the district would have to look for grants to fund such a project.
