JUNEAU - A two-day boating safety course provided in a supportive, women-only classroom, is being offered in Juneau by Alaska Marine Safety Education Association May 7-8.

The class will meet at the University of Alaska Southeast's Bill Ray Center, 1108 F St. on May 7, from 6 to 9 p.m., and May 8, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Saturday's classroom session will be followed by a pool session from 6:15 p.m. until 8:15 p.m., during which participants will use various life jackets and other safety equipment in the water.

This course is intended to give women the confidence and skills to take a small vessel out on their own, or to be able to handle a vessel in the case of an emergency where the primary operator needs assistance.

"Boating Without the Boys" is intended for women who are new, inexperienced boaters, experienced individuals who are new to boating in Alaska, and those who have in the past relied on the boating skills of male companions. Skills are learned in a hands-on format.

Cost for the course is $100. Space is limited and advance registration is required. For more information or to register, contact AMSEA at 907-747-3287 or find more information and online registration at
