Aldersgate to hold Earth Day celebration

Posted: Friday, April 17, 2009

In celebration of Earth Day, Aldersgate United Methodist Church will give thanks for the beauty and gifts of creation during its 11 a.m. service Sunday at 9161 Cinema Dr. The public is welcome.

More than a secular holiday, Earth Day is reflected in the Judeo-Christian scriptures that value creation. Furthermore, many of Jesus' teachings were earth-based.

"It is time for the church to take seriously our responsibility to care for the earth," said Aldersgate pastor Judy Shook.

Shook studied with Matthew Fox, a ground-breaking theologian who challenged the church to take seriously the ancient historical grounds of earth-based spirituality and join in a deeper commitment to care for the earth. She completed a Master of Creation Spirituality and has been involved in eco-spirituality throughout her ministry.
