Juneau resident Leona Gran, 88, died April 14, 2004, at Bartlett Regional Hospital in Juneau after an illness resulting from complications of her stroke three years ago.
She was born July 11, 1916, in Cherry Grove, Ore. She completed her schooling, attended business college and then married Edward Kasnick in 1936 in Oregon. They lived in various towns in northwest Oregon until they moved to Juneau. Leona drove the Alcan by herself with four children, ages 18 to 2 years, arriving in Juneau in June of 1956. She worked as a bookkeeper for the Bureau of Mines, St. Ann's Hospital, the Auke Bay Lab and subsequently purchased The Hamlet dress shop and, finally, The Driftwood Lodge, which she owned and operated for 25 years with her family. After Ed Kasnick's death in 1968 she married Vernon Gran in 1972.
Her family said she especially loved fishing, camping and picnicking with her family. She participated in sports in her youth and was an avid sports fan in her later years. She took great pleasure from lunches with the seniors in Douglas and her volunteer sewing sessions for the Pioneers' Home.
She is preceded in death by husbands, Edward William Kasnick and Vernon Gran; son, Guy Edward Kasnick; and granddaughter, Karinna Caples.
She is survived by her son, Rick (Rachel) Kasnick; daughters, Shirley (Larry) Matheny, Kathy Wilson, and Karen (Paul) Dillon; grandchildren, Edward, Curtis and Greg Birchell, Darci Caples, Kara Vergo, Lori Perkins, Eric Kasnick, Trenton and Kevin Wilson, Zachary, Callahan and Heather Dillon, Tion and Rory Kasnick, Branda Harper; and 28 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Curt and Ed Birchell, Eric Kasnick, Chuck Trierschield, Trent and Kevin Wilson, Callahan Dillon and Tion and Rory Kasnick.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 20 at St. Paul's Catholic Church. Family and friends are invited to a reception after the services at Rick Kasnick's house at 3960 Glacier Highway.
