JUNEAU - The National Marine Fisheries Service and the U.S. Coast Guard are sponsoring a workshop about a program that will track some federally-permitted fishing boats in Alaska this summer.
A free workshop on the Vessel Monitoring System is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. April 23 on the fourth floor of Juneau's federal building.
Under the system, the location and identity of boats can be reported through satellite communications. Permitted vessels that use pot, hook-and-line or trawl gear in the Pacific cod, pollock and Atka mackerel fisheries must have an operable VMS system by June 10.
The system will be used to monitor fishing restrictions in Steller sea lion protection and forage areas, NMFS said.
