Juneau-Douglas High School activities director Sandi Wagner became the first female to be elected president of the Region V Activities Board at the Region V spring meeting held April 13 in Ketchikan.

Wagner will finish out the term of current president Dave Dirksen, which has one year remaining. Besides her duties as activities director at JDHS, Wagner has coached the girls volleyball team for 15 years and has coached the girls soccer team since the sport was added over a decade ago.

Dirksen, who also served as the Region V representative to the Alaska School Activities Association's Board of Control and was ASAA Board President, recently announced his plans to retire as the superintendent of schools for Annette Island School District in Metlakatla. Dirksen, also the Metlakatla High School activities director, will move to Iowa after the school year.

Doug Rhodes, the principal and activities director at Craig High School, was elected to finish out Dirksen's term as Region V Representative on the ASAA Board for two more meetings this year. Rhodes will then serve as representative for a full two-year term.

In other balloting at the Region V meeting, Ketchikan High School activities director Ed Willburn was elected to a two-year term as the Region V secretary/treasurer. Wilburn recently completed the remaining part of the term of Sitka's Jim McGinnis, who retired and moved to Arizona.
