Why would Radhika Sarin (April 3) from Washington, D.C., care about Juneau? Maybe because whatever he says does not affect him, but rather Juneau. It does not matter that the Kensington Mine and Coeur Alaska have provided millions of dollars in direct and indirect wages to Juneau.

Sound off on the important issues at

Think, a new dollar (from Coeur Alaska) circulates three times before it leaves the city. I moved to Anchorage in August 2006. I still consider Juneau my home and care about the people there. I read the Juneau Empire online daily. What I would like to share with you is business is in the business of making money. Without profit, businesses would not run or start, schools would not be needed and supplies would not be bought.

Don't let Outside interest affect your lifestyle, your income, your town, and most of all, your personal quality of life. No one will pay your light bill, oil bill, grocery bill, mortgage or medical debt. It is ultimately up to you. If you can live with a mining company next to your home that will be mandated to comply with all state, local and federal laws, then let your state and local representatives know it is OK.

Ultimately, you are in control. But you must take control of the helm.
