Youth American Bowling Alliance state tournament - The second session of the 22nd annual YABA state tournament takes place this weekend at Channel Bowl, with bowlers from Juneau and Eagle River finishing out the tournament that started the weekend of April 3-6. Gastineau Channel Little League opening day - This year's GCLL Opening Day celebration takes place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, at the Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park baseball field. The snack bar will open at 9 a.m. and teams will begin assembling at 9:30 a.m. Games for competitive divisions will start at 12:30 p.m. at various fields around Juneau and Douglas. Raincountry Flyfishers monthly meeting - Meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 24, at the Floyd Dryden Middle School library as Warren Van Sickle demonstrates how to tie a shrimp pattern for steelhead. Materials will be provided. Bring three flies you've tied, something flyfishing related worth $5 or a $5 bill to get into the drawing. New members are welcome. Gastineau Channel Little League registration for younger players - GCLL registration continues for younger players, with age 5-7 players signing up for Tee Ball and age 8-9 players registering for Farm League baseball or softball. A player's age is determined by the player's age on July 31, 2003. Practices and play for these age groups opens on GCLL Opening Day, Saturday, April 26 (at 10 a.m. at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park). HoopTime basketball shooting clinic - Former Juneau-Douglas High School boys and girls basketball coach Jim Hamey will be teaching basketball players ages 10-18 various types of shots on Saturday and Sunday, April 19-20, at the Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School gym. The fee for this two-day clinic is $50 for members of the Amateur Athletic Union (all HoopTime players that have paid their fees are AAU members) or $62 for non-AAU members. There is a small fee for online registration. The clinic is offered on a first-come, first-served basis and only 80 players will be accepted. Juneau Soccer Club tryouts - The Juneau Soccer Club will be holding outdoor competitive team tryouts for all boys and girls ages 11-14 starting Sunday, April 27, at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park. Ultimate Frisbee registration - The Ultimate Players of Southeast Alaska (UPSEA) are accepting registrations for their 2003 summer league, which runs from May 4 through August. It is a coed league of all ages. New players are encouraged to join, and weekly instructional clinics will be held in May and June. Games are held weekly. The cost is $35 for the season. Juneau-Douglas High School Swim Team/Glacier Swim Club wildlife cruise - This three-hour wildlife viewing cruise departs from the Allen Marine Tours dock at Statter Harbor in Auke Bay at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, and returns at 5 p.m. The cruise costs $50 per person, and the price includes food and refreshments. Tickets are available from GSC senior swimmers and JDHS team members. Make checks payable to "Glacier Swim Club." All proceeds go to help fund the two swim programs. Julie Hughes Triathlon volunteers - Volunteers are needed for the 19th annual Julie Hughes Triathlon in Sitka. The triathlon takes place at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 11, and all registration takes place from 5-7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 10. Adult athletes will cover a course with a 1,000-meter swim, a 12-mile bike and a five-mile run. 4-H cross-country running program - This year's program will meet at 5 p.m. on Thursdays through the summer at various locations around Juneau. The upcoming schedule has the April 24 meeting at Sandy Beach, the May 1 meeting at the Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park track, the May 8 meeting at the Wetlands Trail (at the end of Radcliff Road), the May 15 meeting at Perseverance Trail (end of Basin Road), the May 22 meeting at Riverbend School (for the 4-H Outdoor Olympics) and the May 29 meeting at Cope Park. There will be two running clubs this year - one for elementary school students led by Jamie and John Bursell, and one for middle school students led by Craig Farrington. The two age groups will have different workouts, but will meet near the same place to make car-pooling easy for parents. The season will culminate with the Douglas Two-Miler run on July 4. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation sports field-use registration - The Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation on Monday, April 7, will begin accepting reservations to use Dimond Park and Savikko Park during the summer. Reservations can be made to being using the fields starting on Friday, April 11, with a cost of $15 per hour, plus tax. Until April 21, reservations can only be made in person at the Parks and Rec office downtown at City Hall. Faxed and mailed reservation requests won't be taken until after April 21. Badminton open gyms - Auke Bay: Auke Bay open gyms are done for the year.
