I have been reading with alarm the recent news stories in the Juneau Empire and other papers about the Bush administration's plans for bombing Iran. The existence of such planning within the Defense Department is the most frightening evidence yet that the president, vice president and their neo-conservative allies are out of touch with reality and are truly dangerous to us all. It is past time for Americans to speak out and put a stop to this madness.
Sound off on the important issues at
What can President Bush be thinking? The war in Iraq is going about as badly as a person could imagine, yet now the president wants to start another war, with a country that has three times the population of Iraq. Bombing Iran will not bring about change in that country, it will increase popular support for the current government and Iranians will consider America as their enemy. Remember the vice president's prediction about how American troops would be welcomed as liberators in Iraq? Bombing Iran will worsen the situation in Iraq. It will put our troops at greater risk, and it will further degrade the image of the United States in the rest of the world.
But forget the military and political consequences, terrible as they may be. The greatest perils to the United States from Bush's wars are to the American economy and the health and prosperity of the American people. The financing of the Bush wars is rapidly pushing the country into bankruptcy. Resources that would be better devoted to developing alternative energy sources, improving health care and education and responding to global climate change are unavailable because they are going into bombs and bullets. The American economy depends on foreign oil; bombing Iran will send the price of oil soaring.
The consequences for the typical American family are grim. If you care about your country, if you care about the kind of world your children and grandchildren will inherit, you must act now. Let President Bush know you oppose bombing Iran. Call or write your senators and your congressman asking them to oppose any expansion of the war to Iran, including bombing. Support local resolutions opposing the bombing of Iran. Participate in peaceful, nonviolent protests. Insist that local and national media provide equal time to opponents of President Bush's wars.
