Thousands lose power for less than an hour

JUNEAU - Power went out to a large portion of the city Saturday afternoon, including the Mendenhall Valley and North Douglas.

Alaska Electric Light & Power Co. director of consumer affairs, Gayle Wood, said 10,400 customers lost power at around 4:06 p.m. She said power was restored to all customers between 30 and 45 minutes later.

Wood said the power outage was due to mechanical problems with an electric generator in Auke Bay.

An avalanche early Wednesday destroyed part of the transmission lines AEL&P maintains to provide hydroelectric power from the Snesttisham Power House to town. In response, the company is relying on diesel fuel to generate most of Juneau's electricity.

Wood said Saturday's power outage was not related to the avalanche or the company's switch to diesel power.
