Juneau power crisis spawns hoax article

JUNEAU - A purported Juneau Empire article being faxed and e-mailed among businesses claiming some of Juneau's most prominent businesses will reduce hours as a cost-savings measure did not come from the newspaper, company executives said Friday.

"We've never had anybody try to pose as us before, at least in the five years I've been here," said Michael Plett, interim managing editor at the Juneau Empire.

The article is under an Empire logo, making it appear to have come from the paper's online site. No such article ever appeared.

The Empire was contacted by numerous business owners and others asking where they could find the article on the paper's Web site.

One of those was Dan Glidmann of Merchant's Wharf, one of the businesses mentioned, who was relieved to find out it was a hoax.

"Some prankster, I guess," he said.
