It is very interesting that City Manager Rod Swope claims to know where "some pretty good facilities" are located and "where you could have dance classes or hold performances."
Sound off on the important issues at
For the past 10 years, Juneau Dance Unlimited (JDU) has called the Scottish Rite Temple its home, in the knowledge that there really is no other facility or space available in Juneau for a professional dance school. It would be greatly appreciated if Mr. Swope, or any other City Council member, would personally show JDU where these other "good facilities" are located.
Not only JDU, but perhaps many of the other arts groups in Juneau, trying to find a space to work and rehearse, would benefit from a permanent arts center. The new performing arts theater that is being planned may not in fact address this problem.
In the future, it would be nice to hear a Juneau City Council member say, "Anything we can do to help the fine arts and be a better capital city is a priority for us," when one is about to be replaced by a temporary office or parking garage for a dollar.
