Juneau resident Elmer Marx Jr., 79, died April 8, 2006, in Juneau.
He was born in 1926 in St. Louis. In 1949, while attending veterinary school, he served in Panama as a bombardier and navigator in the U.S. Army Air Corp. In 1953, he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in veterinary medicine. After grad- uation, he began his practice in Waynesburg, Pa., building the Waynesburg Animal Hospital two years later and continuing the practice for another 34 years. In 1989, he and his wife, Brenda, moved to their dream retirement home in Juneau, where he continued his medical practice until May of 2004.
Family members said that his "quiet wisdom and untiring dedication to his trade will be sorely missed, as will his strength of character and fierce desire for a simple, purposeful life, the same purpose that made him a hero to family and friends."
He married Katherine Wall in 1950, then divorced. He married Brenda Lee Guesman of Rices Landing, Pa.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda; sister, Virginia Kiernat; brother, William Marx; children, Michael, Christopher, Susan Kroupa, Katherine West, Karl, Harry, Klaus, Gretchen Marx-Good, Elmer III, Luther "Gus" and Hans; and 32 grandchildren.
Services will be held in Juneau and in Waynesburg later this summer.
Any cards and condolences may be sent to Brenda Marx, 1245 Mendenhall Peninsula Road, Juneau, AK, 99801.
