Seablazers finish second at Anchorage hockey tournament
JUNEAU - They dominated the opening rounds, but five games in a weekend proved too tiring for the Capital City Seablazers as they fell in the title game of last weekend's Alaska State Women's Hockey Tournament in Anchorage.
The Seablazers lost to Rayville Sports 2-1 in Sunday's championship game after going undefeated in four earlier tourney games. Captain Michelle Ridgway scored the lone goal for the Seablazers, who were down three players - one due to injury and two others to early flights home.
"We were so close to winning," forward Elena Delmoral said. "We dominated the tournament. Everyone was like, 'The Juneau girls are really great.'
"In the end, we came home with our heads held high."
The Seablazers were making the first-ever road trip by a Juneau women's hockey squad.
In opening-round games, the Seablazers beat Rayville 6-2; beat Humpy's 5-1; beat the Aleuts 3-0 and beat Bush Company 4-1.
Delmoral said the team is already looking at opportunities for other road trips, as well as the possibility of hosting a tournament in Juneau.
