Haines man guilty of filing false report

HAINES - A 25-year-old Haines man who claimed to have suffered a gunshot wound has pleaded guilty to making a false report.

Alaska State Troopers say Paul L. Swearingen on Sunday called Haines police and said he had suffered an accidental gunshot wound to the stomach. He said he needed a doctor to meet him at a local clinic.

Alaska Wildlife Troopers interviewed Swearingen at the clinic. They found no gunshot wound but spotted a pistol in Swearingen's waist band.

Alaskans carrying concealed weapons are required to inform law officers.

Trooper say Swearingen made the false accidental wound report to obtain a prescription for Vicoden, a narcotic.

Swearingen pleaded guilty Monday to the false report charge plus a weapons misconduct charge.
