ASEA OKs new contract

Terms similar to agreements reached with other unions

JUNEAU - The rank-and-file of the state's largest public workers union has ratified a proposed contract negotiated with the Knowles administration.

The Alaska State Employees Association approved the proposed three-year deal by an overwhelming margin, Chuck O'Connell, the union's business manager, said Friday.

The ASEA represents more than 7,000 state workers, ranging from clerks to doctors.

The contract contains the same provisions as a dozen other state employee pacts - a $1,200 one-time bonus the first year, a 2 percent raise in base pay the second year, and a 3 percent raise in base pay the third year.

While backed by the Knowles administration, the contracts are running into obstacles in the cost-conscious Legislature, which has to approve the funding.

The contracts would cost the general fund an estimated $14 million this year. Republican leaders in the legislative majority are looking to cut $30 million from the budget that must be passed before the end of the session.
