Mary Anderson Wilson

Hoonah resident Mary Anderson Wilson, 92, died April 13, 2003, in Hoonah.

She was born June 10, 1910, in Dundas Bay, Alaska, to Alexander Anderson and Marie Obert Anderson; her stepfather was Percy Jackson. She was Takdein taan and Chookaneidi Yedi, granddaughter to Chookaneidi of Naa Naa Hit and L'uknax-a'di Coho Kaas Hit.

She lived in Hoonah most of her life. She worked in salmon canneries in Hoonah and Excursion Inlet, as well as the crab and shrimp cannery in Hoonah. She was also a midwife.

She was a lifetime member of Alaska Native Sisterhood Camp No. 12. She was a shareholder of Huna Totem Corp., Sealaska Corp., tribal member of the Tlingit-Haida Central Council, Hoonah Indian Association, Mount Fairweather Dancers, and Russian Orthodox Church. She was head of the K'eikw Shaa Sea Pigeons Terns (Seagulls). She was a member of the Mount Fairweather House commonly called the Snail House.

She is preceded in death by her daughters, Martha (Molly) Peters, Tessie Skeek, Martha Marvin and adopted daughter Mary Villarreal; sons Willis Peters Jr., John Marvin Sr., brothers John Anderson, James McKinley Sr., George G. Anderson; sisters Susie Dalton, Ann Hopkins; uncles George Obert Sr., Marion McKinley, Renner McKinley; grandsons Leslie Nick Hillman and Donald John Hillman; and great-granddaughter Frances Williams.

She is survived by daughters Lillian J. Hillman and Genevieve Cook; adopted sons Frederick Bennett and Ron Adreas; stepchildren William Wilson Jr., Starina Johnson, Nina Dick, Barbara Katasse, Harlena Warford and Emily Bezezekoff; cousins Katherine Grant, George Johnson, Sandy Johnson, Violet James, Hilda See, Lottie Underwood, Pauline Hinchman, Marlene Johnson, Adam Greenwald and Karl Greenwald Sr.; and nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held in Hoonah on May 16 at 7 p.m. Her ashes will be buried on May 17 in Hoonah next to her daughter, Tessie.
