Fairbanks man gets 5 years on mail theft

FAIRBANKS - A 25-year-old Fairbanks man has been sentenced to five years in jail after cashing a check stolen from a mailbox.

Micah Whitaker pleaded guilty to forgery and agreed to pay restitution under a plea agreement. Prosecutors agreed to drop fraud and theft charges in the case.

In his only statement to the court Wednesday, Whitaker asked the judge if he would be able to get treatment for methamphetamine addiction while in jail.

A local business last year complained to Alaska State Troopers that a $2,200 check had been stolen from the mail. Video surveillance from a store showed Whitaker cashing the check.

Authorities identified Whitaker as part of the theft ring that targeted mailboxes in the outlying areas of Fairbanks late last year.
