JUNEAU - Alaska Ford dealers have announced a new scholarship program, "Ford Country Scholars," that provides financial assistance to Alaska youth committed to following careers that support rural life.

During the next three years, the program will provide 21 scholarships of $5,000 each to Alaska high school students who are enrolling in universities, colleges, community colleges or technical institutes to prepare for careers in rural communities.

"As part of the Juneau community, it is important to do what we can to ensure a strong future for our next generation of Alaskan leaders," said John Holmquist, owner of Evergreen Ford, Lincoln-Mercury. "We want our young people to recognize the educational, career and lifestyle opportunities right here in Alaska."

Ford Division and its dealers are committing nearly $4 million to the Ford Country Scholars program to provide educational assistance to students in a variety of rural communities over the next three years.

"This scholarship program is one way Ford is demonstrating its commitment to our nation's rural communities," said Cisco Codina, general marketing manager of Ford Division. "Supporting Alaska's future generation will help ensure a healthy economy and livelihood for our state."

Scholastic achievement, local community service and career plans that support rural life will be among the qualifications sought. Eligibility requirements and judging criteria will be included with the application form.

Applications for the 2002 scholarships are available from Ford dealerships statewide. Applications also are available on the Internet at www.fordcountryscholars.com and through many local high school guidance counselors. Completed applications must be postmarked by May 17, 2002.

A panel of Alaska Ford dealers, Ford Division representatives and local educators and civic leaders will judge scholarship applications. Recipients of the 2002 scholarships will be notified this summer.

Evergreen Ford, Lincoln-Mercury is located at 8895 Mallard St. and is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. For more information, call 789-9386.
