JDHS boys second, girls third at Skyview

Crimson Bear track and field team posts strong showing against state's best

Posted: Sunday, April 24, 2005

The Juneau-Douglas High School boys and girls track teams performed exceptionally well Friday and Saturday in what Crimson Bears coach Scott May labeled as the premier invitational in Alaska.

The boys team took second place and the girls claimed third at the 22-team Skyview Invitational in Soldotna over the weekend.

"Awesome, it was a great weekend for us," May said. "It was great competition. The Juneau-Douglas boys got second place for the first time ever."

Tristian Knutson-Lombardo led the boys by besting the field in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs.

The senior captured the mile with a time of 4 minutes, 27.22 seconds, and won the two-mile after crossing the tape at 9:42.86, nearly eight seconds better than his closest competition.

"He won the 3,200 meters and had a 4-second personal record which is great," May said. "He then turned around the next day and won the mile with a state-best 4:27.2."

Junior twins Tyler and Wesley Dinnan provided terrific runs in the distance events. Wesley placed fourth in the 3,200 and fifth in the mile while Tyler took fourth in the mile and finished a close second in the 800.

West Valley's Anders Gillis nipped Tyler Dinnan at the wire in the 800, beating the Bears' standout by a scant 0.12 seconds.

The team of Tyler and Wesley Dinnan, Justin Jones and Brian Smith won the 3,200 relay with a time of 8:41.22, more than five seconds better than second-place Kenai Central.

Sophomore hurdler Levi Benning scored a personal best in the 110 high hurdles, finishing second at 16.18. He also took third place in the 300 intermediate hurdles.

Senior co-captain Mike Bickmore finished third in the triple jump with a personal best of 39-feet, 3 3/4 inches.

Kenai Central earned the overall boys title.

The girls took third place overall, edging fourth-place Colony by one point, by utilizing their exceptional depth. West Valley finished first and Soldotna earned second place.

The 800-meter relay team of Evelyn Fisher, Gwen Miller, Rachelle Albay and Katie Krehlik dusted the competition to earn the Bears' lone first-place finish of the meet, winning with a time of 1:55.8.

Krehlik, a freshman, continued her impressive high school debut with a third in the 1,600 and a fourth in the 3,200. She also teamed with Jordan Harvey, Jordan Moser and Gabrielle Vance for a second-place finish in the 3,200 relay.

Juneau's 1,600 relay team of Miller, Harvey, Krehlik and Caitlin Niewoehner took second place.

Harvey shaved nine seconds off her personal best in the 800 by running a 2:29 in the preliminary Friday. She placed fifth in Saturday's final.

Miller took fifth place in both hurdles events while Fisher took fifth in the 200 and a strong second place in the 400.

Juneau comes home this weekend to host Sitka, Petersburg, Kodiak, Ketchikan, Haines, Mount Edgecumbe, Gustavus and Metlakatla in an invitational.
