Stop eating meat for a better Earth

I am a member of Alaska Youth for Environmental Action at Juneau-Douglas High School. Our group spoke about climate change and its 3-2-1 campaign on April 14 at the Mendenhall Glacier and downtown at Marine Park. I know many people are worried about the climate and environment, but I think people are not thinking about a big contributor to pollution - eating meat.

Sound off on the important issues at

One of the top two or three contributors to water pollution is from raising animals to eat. You save more water by not eating a pound of beef than by not showering for an entire year. Every minute, an area of rain forest the size of seven football fields is destroyed to make room for grazing cattle, and more than one-third of all raw materials and fossil fuels currently used in the United States go to raising animals for food.

Yet the majority of people don't pay any attention to this problem. By not eating meat you will not only help the environment, but help save the life of an animal so it won't be tortured and killed.

I know to quit eating meat is hard, but I personally think not having a beautiful Earth to live on peacefully with all creatures is harder. If you love the environment and animals, then you should become a vegetarian. You can't be a true environmentalist, if you eat meat.
