It's time for us to take care of our own affairs

Letter to the editor

I am writing in response to the front page articles, "Juneau man charged with murder" and "Gunman kills 32 at Virginia campus," dated April 17. When I read these articles, I started to think that we should stop the war in Iraq and start funding our homeland instead. It is our own people who are attacking ourselves.

Sound off on the important issues at

We should figure out a solution to our own problems, before taking care of problems in other countries. We should start funding more prevention programs for the mentally ill and alcoholics. For example, give more funding to the Rainforest Recovery Center, Even Start and so on. It is imperative that we take care of our own communities.

Also, we need to give more funding to help deal with our troops that come home from Iraq. The soldiers return depressed and with many mental issues.

We can prevent problems such as gunmen shooting in our schools and colleges. I ask our leaders in Congress to put money where it can be of use in our own communities and to stop funding the war in Iraq. Congress also should halt spending (though not indefinitely) for the space program.

We should start concentrating by cleaning our own house. We are still the best country in the world, and we should keep it that way.

I ask leaders such as U.S. Rep. Don Young and U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens to help fund Juneau's community programs so it can boast the best schools and prevention programs in the world. Juneau should stay the best capital in the United States and the world. God bless America.
