USAF jets stop in Juneau

JUNEAU - Two Air Force F-15C Eagle jets left Juneau with a roar Thursday morning, startling residents who heard or saw them zoom over the Gastineau Channel at 9 a.m.

The planes are based out of Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage. They were transporting an Air Force colonel to the Lower 48 for "official business," said Sgt. Connie Bias.

"They had a problem that was not uncommon or drastic, so they diverted to Juneau," Bias said.

The Eagles arrived Tuesday, using the Juneau Airport runway and parking by the National Guard hangar, said airport Manager Allan Heese. The colonel took a commercial flight south from Juneau, Bias said.

Heese said only one of the jets needed repairs. "They typically stay in pairs," he said.

Bias said the planes continued to the Lower 48 after leaving Juneau.
