Before we spend $300 million dollars to build a controversial road-dock-shuttle ferry complex connecting Juneau with Haines, let's look at some disturbing facts.
There are more than 300 communities in Alaska, but only 29 are within 250 miles of the capital. For the other 281 communities (90 percent), 33 are up to 500 miles away, 85 are up to 750 miles away, 99 are up to 1,000 miles away, 59 are up to 1,250 miles distant, and seven are 1,500 miles away. Add another 20 percent to 60 percent to these figures because the vast majority of these communities lack direct air service to their capital.
My point? It's past time we centrally locate our capital for the benefit and convenience of all Alaskans, and quit pouring money down a rat hole in Juneau.
