Youth Concerto Competition on Sunday

The Juneau Symphony's 2001 Youth Concerto Competition will be noon Sunday in Room 113 of Hendrickson Hall at the University of Alaska Southeast. The public is welcome to come hear performances by violinists Andrew Sigler and Franz Felkl and pianist Daniel Gruenberg.

The annual competition showcases the talents of young Southeast musicians. Musicians compete for the opportunity to perform in concert with the Juneau Symphony.

Symphony administrator Jetta Whittaker said all three performers this year are from Juneau. Sigler will perform a composition by Seitz, Felkl will perform a Vivaldi piece and Gruenberg will be playing Mozart. Accompanists will be Sue Kazama and Mary Watson. Judges will be Kyle Wiley Pickett, Ken Leghorn and Elizabeth Evans. There will be a short reception while the judges deliberate, and the event should be over by 1 p.m. There is no admission charge.

Last year's winners were 14yearold violinist Megan Bush and clarinetist Niko Hoskins, then 17.

Night of Broadway and chocolate

Juneau musicians Ron DeLay, Geoffrey Wyatt and Jacque Farnsworth will perform an evening of music Saturday to benefit special needs students and classroom technology in the Juneau School District.

"Broadway and Chocolate: A Night of Great Songs of Broadway" starts at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Mendenhall River Community School commons. A silent auction for chocolate desserts also will be held. Tickets are $10.

Delay and Wyatt both work in the Juneau School District. Last year DeLay directed the musical, "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" and performed the part of Snoopy. Wyatt played the part of Charlie Brown. Farnsworth played in the "Charlie Brown" band and will accompany the singers Saturday.

DeLay said the performance will include songs from the musicals "Man of LaMancha," "Ragtime," "Phantom of the Opera," "Cats," "My Fair Lady," "Whistle Down the Wind," "Oklahoma," and "Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat."
