4-H Youth Running Club: The 4-H youth running club will meet today until from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Perseverance Trail Head. This club is open to youth currently enrolled in grades K through 5, and focuses on running for fun and fitness. New members are welcome. Participants should dress for the weather, wear sturdy running shoes, and bring their own water. Contact Jamie or John Bursell at 789-5997 with any questions.

Juneau Alpine Club -- Juneau Ice Field crossing, a seven- to 10-day, high-energy level output trip. Fly from Juneau ($270 per person), and bring camping equipment and cross-country skis. Info: Trip leader Bill Forrest, 789-3008.

Southeast Road Runners -- May Day Mud (and Mountain) Run: Meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Fish Creek parking lot in North Douglas, race starts 10 a.m. Long course (seven miles) takes runners up through the woods toward Eaglecrest Ski Area before they return to sea level for a run across Gastineau Channel and back at low tide. Short course (three miles) involves a run across Gastineau Channel and back. Info: Clayton Hawkes, 790-4388.

Gastineau Channel Little League -- Opening Day Celebration: Teams meet at 9 a.m. at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park baseball field to get ready for 50th anniversary celebration that starts at 10 a.m. This is the 50th GCLL baseball season and 16th for softball. The season is dedicated to former player Brandon Pilot and longtime volunteer Alvin Minard "Skeet" Mill, who both recently passed away. Roger Grummett, who was one of the first players in the league and has put his kids and grandkids through it, will throw out the first baseball pitch. Mandy Massey Bixby, one of the first softball players, with throw out the first softball pitch. A used equipment and uniform sale will also take place. Info: GCLL president J. Juneau Sailing Club -- Opening Day Celebration: Meet between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the new Norway Point floating dock near the Juneau Yacht Club. Gastineau Channel Little League preseason managers and coaches meetings -- Mandatory meetings to go over rules, procedures and opening day for all managers and coaches. Kluane-Chilkat International Bicycle Relay packets available -- Entry packets for the Ninth Annual Kluane to Chilkat International Bicycle Relay will be available in Juneau at Mountain Gears, Foggy Mountain Shop and the valley Juneau Racquet Club by April 20. The 156-mile relay is held on Saturday, June 16. It starts in Haines Junction, Yukon Territory, and ends in Haines, Alaska, and is for teams of one, two, four and eight riders. Application forms are also available on the Internet at The entry fee is $34 per rider, which includes a t-shirt, post-race dinner and awards breakfast. Entries must be postmarked by May 15. Adult soccer scrimmages -- Open scrimmages for adults age 18 and older are being held from 5-7 p.m. every Sunday through June 24 at the Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park football field. For more information, contact the Capital City Soccer League, 364-2503.

Juneau Soccer Club tryouts -- Tryouts for players ages 11-17 will be held on Sunday, April 29, for the 2001 JSC season. The following tryouts will take place at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park -- U12/U13 boys at 9:30-11 a.m., U16/U17 girls from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., U12/U13 girls at 12:30-2 p.m., U14/U15 girls at 2-3:30 p.m. and U14/U15 boys at 3:30-5 p.m. Tryouts for U16/U17 boys are 2-3:30 p.m. at Dimond Park. Only Fools Run at Night volunteers search -- Volunteers are needed to help with this Muscular Dystrophy Association of Alaska fund-raising event held from 7 p.m. to midnight on Friday, June 22, at Centennial Hall.
