Philatelic society to hold sale
Gastineau Philatelic Society will hold PANEX 42, an exhibition and sale, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, April 27, and from noon to 4 p.m., Sunday, April 28, at the Nugget Mall. The theme of the 42nd annual exhibition is the centennial of the Sentinel Island Lighthouse.
The cachet and the special U.S. Post Office cancellation were designed by Seely Hall Jr. The insert, which describes the lighthouse, was written by Gary Gillette, president of the Gastineau Channel Historical Society, which has leased the lighthouse from the U.S. Coast Guard.
The Statue of Liberty coil stamp was chosen for the cachet because the Statue of Liberty, though usually floodlit, is itself a lighthouse, and was the first lighthouse in the United States to be lit by electricity. The price of the cachet is $3.
In conjunction with the exhibition, the Mendenhall Valley branch of the U.S. Post Office will have a philatelic sales booth at the mall. The cachet is valid for postal use if mailed at this special sales booth.
